The Manual, 2008
From “being: paul + kate”
Digital C-print on board

From December 2005 – May 2008, we performed being: paul and kate, constructing ourselves as a scientist and a philosopher focused on influencing personal identity through the isolation and control of fundamental daily variables.

Kate and Paul can be thought of in terms of the living object/ residual/ documentation of multiple, ongoing conversations and actions. These conversations take place in the immaterial space of (pk), and when combined and recombined, they articulate different things. There are the primary conversations which occur between the individual artists, where they explore the nature of collaboration. There are the conversations between traditional and new media, where they observe, for example, the interactions between painting and video. There are the many attempts to translate static into fluid, intuitive into phenomenal, idea into object.

One final object-based result of the original set of experiments, is the Crazy Dancers, a sculptural painting and surrogate performer.

The piece consists of two freestanding 2′ x 6′ acrylic self-portraits on Plexiglas, each with a 4″ video monitor mounted in the center of the painting. The videos are two five-minute loops recording the daily experiments over the course of the project.
